Retirement Income Planning in Gilroy
When the paychecks stop, your income has to come from somewhere specific. We line up Social Security, savings, pensions and annuity options against the rules that govern each one, then show you on paper what arrives each month and why.
What retirement income planning actually covers
Retirement income planning turns a pile of accounts into a schedule. We look at each source you have, the date it can start, how it is taxed, and what happens to it if you or your spouse dies first. The goal is a monthly figure you can count on, with the gaps identified before you retire rather than after.
Most of the work is about rules. Social Security pays more for every year you wait past full retirement age, up to 70. Required minimum distributions from IRAs and 401(k) plans begin at 73 under current federal law. California has its own suitability standards for annuity sales and gives buyers 60 and older a 30-day window to cancel a new annuity for a refund. We explain each of these in plain language so you know why a recommendation fits, not just what it is.
We are a life insurance agency, so we focus on the insurance side: annuities that create guaranteed income, life coverage that protects a surviving spouse, and how those pieces sit next to your other savings. For tax filing questions we suggest you bring in your tax preparer, and we are glad to work alongside them.
What we review and put in writing
An income source inventory
We list every source: Social Security for each spouse, pensions, 401(k) and IRA balances, rental or business income, and existing annuities or cash value life insurance. Each gets a start date and an estimated monthly amount.
Social Security timing comparison
We compare claiming at 62, at full retirement age and at 70, including how the choice affects a surviving spouse's benefit. The survivor piece is often the part people overlook.
Gap analysis against your expenses
We set your expected monthly spending next to guaranteed income. The difference is the gap your savings or an annuity has to cover, and we show how long savings last at different withdrawal rates.
Annuity options explained line by line
If guaranteed income makes sense, we lay out fixed, fixed indexed and income annuity choices with their surrender schedules, fees and payout terms in writing. If an annuity does not fit, we say so.
Spousal and beneficiary protection
We check how a pension election or annuity payout option treats the surviving spouse, and whether life coverage such as whole life or universal life insurance would replace income lost at the first death. Beneficiary designations get reviewed on every account.

Signals that your retirement income needs a plan
- Retirement is five years away or less
- Social Security claiming, pension elections and rollovers tend to land in these years, and several of those decisions are permanent once made.
- You don't know your monthly retirement income
- If you can name an account total but not a monthly amount, the plan still has work left.
- Your pension paperwork asks for a payout choice
- Single-life and joint-and-survivor payouts can be far apart. Picking single-life with no life coverage behind it can leave a spouse without enough.
- Your savings are mostly in pre-tax accounts
- From age 73, required minimum distributions make you take taxable withdrawals. Deciding the withdrawal order ahead of time gives you more say over the tax bill.
- You are being pressed to buy an annuity you don't follow
- Request the surrender schedule, fees and payout terms on paper. We will go through any contract you were offered, even one from a different agent.
How a planning engagement runs
- 1
First conversation by phone
We ask about your retirement date, spending, accounts and family situation. There is no paperwork yet, only questions so we know what to gather.
- 2
Gathering statements
You collect your Social Security statement, pension estimates and recent account statements. We tell you exactly which documents matter so you are not hunting for everything.
- 3
Written income map
We build a year-by-year schedule showing each source, when it starts, and the gap that remains. Any product recommendation comes with the reason it fits and the alternatives we considered.
- 4
Review and decisions
We meet where it suits you, including at your workplace, and go through the map line by line. You decide on your own timeline, and any annuity you buy still carries the California cancellation window.
What affects the cost of your plan
Talking through your situation and seeing the income map does not lock you into anything. When you choose an insurance product, the cost depends on the product itself and your circumstances. We show premiums, fees and surrender charges in writing before you sign.
- Your age at purchase
- Income annuities pay more per dollar the older you are when payments start. Life coverage premiums rise with age, so timing changes both sides.
- Optional contract features
- Add-ons like a guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefit, a yearly cost-of-living increase or an enhanced amount left to heirs are not free. Each one is deducted from the contract value or trims the payout. We quote the annuity bare and then with each add-on, so you see what every feature costs you.
- Surrender period length
- A contract with a longer surrender schedule may credit a higher rate, but pulling out more than the penalty-free amount during those years triggers a charge. We pick a schedule that ends before the year you expect to need that cash.
- Health for any life coverage
- If the plan includes life insurance to protect a spouse, underwriting looks at health history and medications. Better health classes mean lower premiums.
Retirement income planning questions
- Is planning worthwhile if my savings are modest?
- Yes, and often more so. With smaller savings, Social Security and any pension make up most of your income, so a poorly timed claim or the wrong pension election takes a bigger bite. The timing rules apply the same way at any account balance.
- Will you tell me to buy an annuity?
- Only if guaranteed income closes a real gap and the contract terms fit your timeline. California rules require that an annuity recommendation be suitable for the buyer, and we document why. Plenty of plans end with no new product at all.
- What happens if I change my mind after buying an annuity?
- In California, buyers 60 and older have 30 days from delivery of the contract to cancel and get their money back. Younger buyers have a shorter window. We point out the exact period on your contract.
- How does life insurance fit into retirement income?
- When one spouse dies, one Social Security check stops and some pensions shrink. Life coverage can replace that lost income for the survivor. We look at whether term life insurance, whole life insurance or universal life insurance suits the length of that need.
- I live in Morgan Hill. Can we still plan together?
- Of course. Our clients come from Morgan Hill, San Martin, Hollister, Watsonville and other towns around Gilroy. The phone handles most of the back and forth, and we set up a face-to-face review whenever you prefer one.
