Universal Life Insurance in Gilroy

Universal life is permanent coverage where the amount you pay can move up or down from year to year. We explain how the policy is funded, which federal tax limits apply and what keeps it from lapsing, so the plan still holds up decades from now.

What universal life is and who it suits

Think of universal life as insurance attached to an account. A share of every premium you pay lands in the cash value. Once a month the insurer takes out its cost of insurance and policy fees. The balance earns interest at a declared rate or one linked to a market index, depending on the design. Coverage stays active for as long as that balance can pay the monthly charges.

That arrangement gives you room to adjust, and it is also where policies go wrong. Insurance charges climb with age. A policy paid at the lowest allowed amount can look healthy for fifteen years, then empty out quickly. We go through the illustration with you line by line, the guaranteed column included, not only the optimistic projection.

It usually suits people who want coverage for life but need flexibility in yearly payments. Business owners with uneven income, people planning cash for estate costs and anyone who has outgrown term life but finds whole life premiums too fixed are common fits.

What we cover when you call

Choosing the policy type
We explain guaranteed universal life, current-assumption universal life and indexed universal life, and how each one credits interest. Guaranteed designs trade cash value growth for a fixed no-lapse promise. Indexed designs offer more upside with caps and floors you need to understand.
Reading the illustration
Every proposal comes with an illustration showing premiums, cash value and coverage by year. We point out where the guaranteed and non-guaranteed columns split, and at what age the guaranteed column hits zero.
IRS limits in plain terms
Section 7702 of the federal tax code limits how much cash a policy can hold compared with its face amount. Put in too much during the first seven years and the IRS reclassifies the policy, so money you borrow or withdraw is taxed on its gains first. We test your planned premiums against those limits before you sign.
Riders and guarantees
A no-lapse guarantee rider can keep coverage in force to a set age if you pay a specified premium on time. We also explain chronic illness and waiver of premium riders and what each adds to the monthly charges.
Who owns it and who receives it
A policy has an owner, an insured person and at least one beneficiary, and those roles do not have to belong to the same person. We set up a first-in-line recipient plus a backup, so the proceeds still have a clear destination if your first choice dies before you. When the coverage protects a business, the company or a co-owner may make more sense as owner of record.

Signs universal life may be the right policy

  • Your term coverage runs out soon

When the level period on a term life policy is nearly over and the need for protection has not gone away, converting or switching to universal life keeps you covered with no fixed end date.

  • Your income is uneven

Seasonal or commission income makes a fixed premium hard to keep up. Universal life lets you pay more in strong months and less in lean ones, within limits.

  • Your business depends on you

Key person coverage or a buy-sell agreement often calls for coverage that lasts as long as the business does, not just twenty years.

  • An old policy statement looks wrong

If your annual statement shows cash value shrinking or a letter warns of a projected lapse, the policy may be underfunded. We can review it and show your options.

  • You want to leave cash for estate costs

Heirs may need cash quickly to settle debts or keep property. Permanent coverage puts money in a beneficiary's hands when it is needed.

What drives the price of universal life

Universal life quotes vary widely because the premium follows how you want the policy to behave. A design guaranteed to last to age 121 costs more than one paid at the minimum. These factors move the price the most.

Your age and rating class

Your cost of insurance is based on age, sex and underwriting class. Tobacco use and conditions such as diabetes or heart disease put you in a higher-rated class.

Amount of coverage

More coverage means a bigger monthly insurance charge, although the price per thousand often falls in higher bands.

How much you pay in

Sticking to the minimum keeps payments small today but raises the chance of a lapse later. Paying nearer the target premium builds cash value that can cover rising charges.

Guarantees and add-ons

A no-lapse guarantee to an advanced age, or extra riders, raises the premium you must pay. You choose which are worth adding.

From first call to policy delivery

  1. 1

    Phone conversation

We ask about your age, health, income pattern, the people or business you want to protect and how long you need coverage. That narrows the policy type quickly.

  2. 2

    Proposals and illustrations

We prepare illustrations at a few funding levels and go over them with you. You see what happens if rates drop or you skip payments.

  3. 3

    Application and underwriting

The insurer reviews your application and may order a paramedical exam, a prescription history check and a records check. Underwriting can take several weeks, and we keep you informed on where it stands.

  4. 4

    Delivery and review period

Once the policy is issued, we read through the contract together. California sets a window after delivery during which you can hand the policy back and have your premium returned, so you have time to be sure.

  5. 5

    Yearly check-ins

Universal life needs attention. Each year we can compare your statement to the original illustration and adjust premiums before a shortfall builds.

Common universal life questions

What sets universal life apart from whole life?

Whole life fixes the premium and the cash value schedule on the day it is issued. With universal life, you choose the payment within limits, and the cash value grows only as quickly as the credited interest allows. You get more flexibility in exchange for less certainty. Our whole life insurance page explains the fixed-payment choice.

Is a lapse possible while I am still paying?

Yes, when your payments fall short of the monthly deductions over the years. Higher cost of insurance or lower credited rates can use up the cash value. A no-lapse guarantee rider, paid on time, stops that from happening up to the guaranteed age.

What does modified endowment contract mean?

It describes a policy that received more premium in its first seven years than the federal seven-pay test allows. Your coverage stays in place. What changes is the tax treatment: withdrawals and loans count as taxable gain first, and before age 59 and a half that gain can carry an added 10 percent federal penalty. We keep funding under the limit unless you choose otherwise.

Can I take a loan against the cash value?

Generally yes, after cash value has accumulated. Loans build interest and lower your beneficiary's payout if left unpaid. A big outstanding loan can also make the policy lapse, so we show you the impact before you borrow.

Can you review a universal life policy I own now?

Yes. Call with your most recent annual statement handy. We will look at the cash value, current charges and projected lapse age, then tell you directly whether paying more, reducing the face amount or replacing the policy is worth doing.
